Dear Claudette, family, and friends. Kindly accept my heartfelt sympathy upon the passing of Dr. Aubrey Clarke. Dr. Clarke was the first medical director I served under when I entered the residency program at the Sydenham Neighborhood Family Care Center on West 125th Street in Harlem. I now realize and understand just how Dr. Clarke influenced my personal development and professional growth as a hospital attending. His willingness to share his clinical knowledge and expertise as well as his wit, words of wisdom, and pleasant disposition had such an impact on me that to this day, I believe influenced me to seek my own appointment as the Director of the Department of Dentistry. When I met him 1982, I had no idea he would serve as my mentor. While I either consciously or subconsciously related to his influence upon me for how I would interact with patients, staff, hospital residents, and people in general, there is one “Dr. Clarke trait” that I could never emulate, his impeccable dress! May his lifelong work continue to be a testament to his character. May he rest in eternal peace.
